In an interview with Car and Bike, Managing Director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Mr. N Raja detailed the losses incurring to the company due to the diesel ban of above 2000 cc vehicles in Delhi. Toyota lost 7 percent of its sales of the Fortuner as well as both the generations of Innova. This makes their new product lose its actual charm.
The ban was introduced in December 2015 while it has been several times challenged by many authorities. It was the National Green Tribunal(NGT) which acted upon the cars above 2000 cc by claiming them polluting and restricting their sales.
The brands are forced to re-plan their strategies and investment plans in the country. Nearly every carmaker's niche products are above 2000 cc whereas the most affected ones like Mercedes Benz and JLR have no diesel engine below 2.1 L and 2.2 L in India respectively. Other like Volvo, BMW and Audi can survive a bit as they are still having their cars with 1969 cc, 1995 cc and 1968 cc engines respectively.
The Indian brands like Tata and Mahindra are also affected while the second one has now developed its 1.99 L engine for the NCR region. The ban is still on its full and may soon end as it has gone a long way in pressing down the rights of various business hubs around the world.
