A report by The Hindu revealed that Maruti has sold over 1 lac AMT cars ever since the technology was first introduced in 2014. Another survey has revealed that 1 in every 10 cars sold in India is an automatic.
The market for automatic cars is definitely on the rise. With aims to capture, this Maruti introduced the AMT technology i.e Automated Manual Transmission. The AMT technology is clutch-less, two pedal technology which is much more fuel efficient than fully automatic transmissions and quite cheaper too.
AMT, also known AGS (auto gear shift) is available in Celerio, Alto K-10, Wagon R and Dzire. Out of 1 lac Maurti AMT sales; 97000 were sold in the domestic market while 3100 were exported. While the model-wise sales were; 66,000 units of Celerio AGS variant, 18,000 units of Alto K10, 12,000 units of the WagonR and 2,200 units of the Maruti Suzuki DZire.
According to Mr Kalsi, "AGS as a technology saw great acceptance from customers due to convenience of automatic transmission, available with the fuel efficiency of a manual transmission. It has particularly seen great response from women and youth.”
Seeing Maruti's success in AMT segmen, other carmakers have also introduced AMT versions of their cars.
