The Delhi Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been instructed by National Green Tribunal (NGT) to deregister all the 10 year old diesel vehicles in Delhi with immediate effect. This order has been passed to curb the rising pollution levels in Delhi. The decision to deregister has been taken by a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar which demands immediate implementation. The RTO has even been asked to give a list of all such vehicles to the Delhi Traffic Police.

Last year in April, NGT had directed the government to ban all the decade old diesel vehicles in Delhi. The ban failed to be enforced then because it was figure out that RTO is the right authority to take decisions related to such bans. This time NGT has come up with a public notice to the RTO to make sure the ban gets successfully implemented.

The car owners have hopes from the government of an incentive policy for those who want to dispose off their old vehicles. Now this move is expected to generate the demand for new cars because carowners will now look towards the showrooms for replacements. This will also lead to dwindling demand of diesel vehicles as their future remains uncertain in the country. Recently, NGT had also come up with an idea to ban new registrations for diesel vehicles over 2,000 cc in several other cities in the country.
